Wood is a fundamental building material that plays a major role in the design of our physical environment. Wooden beams and foundation piles are the supports of our buildings, wooden frames and doors frame the view outside, and wooden floorboards are the humble supports of human existence. We eat at wooden tables, sit on wooden chairs and store our things in wooden cupboards and shelves. We print our stories on paper, and we also wipe our butts with it. How often do we think about the fact that all these ‘products’ have been part of a living organism?

The relationship between people and trees is centuries old. On the one hand there is the craftsman, who lovingly works a plank of wood to make a piece of furniture, on the other hand we have industrialized the process of logging, and reduced the tree and its life to a dead material without self-determination.

Or can it be seen differently? Is there a mutually nurturing relationship between humans and trees? We monitor the health of forests, maintain individual trees, and ensure that more is planted than cut. We also make furniture or buildings from wood and that way the material lives on.

In the ‘Anonymous Wood’ project we investigate, through a film and sensory installation, the relationship that people and wood enter into with each other along the entire wood production chain. From forest management to the furniture maker to pulverization into wood chips. We approach the wood as a migrant who travels different routes and goes through life stages. We leave the viewer the question: Is there brutal exploitation or is there a mutually caring relationship?

Hout is een fundamenteel bouwmateriaal, dat een grote rol speelt in de vormgeving van onze fysieke leefomgeving. Houten balken en funderingspalen zijn de dragers van onze gebouwen, houten kozijnen en deuren houten kaderen het zicht naar buiten, en houten vloerplanken zijn de nederige dragers van het menselijk bestaan. Daarbij eten we aan houten tafels, zitten op houten stoelen en bergen we onze spullen in houten kasten en planken. We drukken onze verhalen op papier, en vegen we er ook onze billen mee af. Hoe vaak staan we stil bij het feit dat al deze ‘producten’ onderdeel zijn geweest van een levend organisme?

De relatie tussen mens en boom is eeuwenoud. Enerzijds is er de ambachtsman, die met liefde een plank hout bewerkt om er een meubelstuk van te maken, anderzijds hebben we het proces van houtkap geïndustrialiseerd, en de boom en zijn leven gereduceerd tot een doods materiaal zonder zelfbeschikking.

Of kan het ook anders worden gezien? Bestaat er een wederzijds verzorgende relatie tussen mens en boom? Wij monitoren de gezondheid van bossen, onderhouden individuele bomen, en zorgen dat er meer wordt aangeplant dan gekapt. Daarnaast maken we van hout meubels of gebouwen en leeft het materiaal op die manier voort.

In het project ‘Anonymous Wood’ onderzoeken wij middels een film- en zintuiglijke installatie, de relatie die mens en hout met elkaar aangaan langs de gehele productieketen van het hout. Van het bosbeheer tot aan de meubelmaker tot aan de verpulvering tot houtsnippers. We benaderen het hout als een migrant die verschillende routes aflegt en levensfases doormaakt. We laten de kijker de vraag: Is er sprake van brute exploitatie of is er een wederzijde verzorgende relatie?
